Location
Shippagan is located on the Acadian Peninsula in northeast New Brunswick, at the mouth of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Chaleurs Bay. The town is bordered on the northeast by Shippagan harbour, part of the Bay of Shippagan, and to the southeast by the Saint-Simon Bay.
The town’s main street is called Boulevard J.-D.-Gauthier, named after Dr. J. Dominique Gauthier. The university campus and most businesses are found along this boulevard.
To the north of the boulevard is the Port of Shippagan, where visitors can admire one of the province’s largest fishing fleets. This area also houses a sports centre, the Aquarium and Marine Centre, an historic lighthouse, the church, a marina, the Coastal Zones Research Institute, the premises of CCNB PA, plants and fishing gear stores. A magnificent multipurpose trail runs alongside the shore.
The residential area is located on the south side of the boulevard, along with schools, the Centre Rhéal Cormier and City Hall.
The town has an area of 9.94 km² and a density of 277.1 residents per km². Ninety-nine percent of its population is French speaking.
